The Chief's Private Detail

The Chief’s Private Detail: a no-touching rule with a loophole

The rule is stated up front: nobody touches the new police chief, and anyone who lays a hand on her is fired and charged. Then Chief Vera Lancaster picks Cole, the rookie nobody wanted to partner with, for her night detail.

The Chief’s Private Detail on Candy, a new arrival, runs on that contradiction. She explains why she chose him: the rest of the force studies the floor as she passes, while he meets her eyes. The policy, she points out, restricts his hands, and it says nothing about hers.

That loophole is the hook. Cole has a career to lose if he crosses the line, and the chief seems to enjoy daring him to try. Colleagues are watching and a captain is never far away. Five episodes carry the dare.

Chief, rookie, captain and an officer who sees too much

The chief is the authority with a plan, Cole is the rookie she singles out, and the captain stands for the policy she wants to bend. A fellow officer also notices what is going on and decides to report it. Cole is no exception: the rookie is an adult like everyone else.

Vera Lancaster, who holds the cast line alone, is a computer-made persona, neither a real officer nor a real performer, and no licensed twin is used. Every person and event in the series is fictional.
